Protest as TNFD has Vale on panel

Activists protested today at an event organized by the Taskforce on Nature Related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), which had a representative of Vale on its panel. Vale is responsible for two major tailing dam collapses, which killed hundreds and destroyed the Rio Doce river. “By hosting Vale on its panel, the TNFD seems to be supporting the company’s greenwashing”, said Merel van der Mark, coordinator of Forests & Finance.

Shirley Krenak was among the protesters. Her people live in the valley of the Rio Doce, and have seen their lives extremely impacted with the destruction of the river. She negotiated space to talk to the event attendees, required all of them to stand up, and during an emotional speech she told them that her people are being killed, that indigenous people are being killed by exploitative companies. But that if we don’t change course, the impacts on the climate and biodiversity will end up killing us all.
